The pork soup dumplings are amazing! I was full and couldn't stop eating them. I'm from CA and as you can imagine I have access to various delicious foods. These dumplings were no joke and are the top 5 of the best tasting foods I've ever had. The service was also friendly. They were able to help us choose the best menu items and provided complimentary hot tea. It was a rainy night so nothing beats that type of vibe. The interior reminded me of what Chinese restaurants looked like many years ago. When you walk to the bathroom, you can see how old the building is. It's an amazing place to stop while in Chinatown, NY. We will miss this!

Stopped in at 456 New Shanghai with a big group on the later end of the day & ordered family style, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish! Located in the heart of NYC, this place is a gem for anyone craving delicious Chinese food. We started with the green beans, which were cooked to perfection - crisp, juicy, and garlic-y. Next up, we had the crab & pork soup dumplings and the steamed pork soup dumplings. Both types of dumplings were bursting with juicy, savory fillings and broth. The crab & pork dumplings had a delightful crab flavor that wasn't overwhelming for someone isn't particularly fond of crab like myself, while the pork dumplings were rich and hearty. The bok choy & mushrooms were fresh and juicy. It was a great balance to the meal and a wonderful way to get some greens. They could've used a little more seasoning & flavor, but still a nice refreshing dish to add some fiber The crispy pan-fried noodles were the perfect end to our feast. The noodles were crispy as advertised, and topped with a pile of vegetables and savory sauce that brought everything together. A nice dish that combines flavorful sauce, crispy noodles, and some juicy vegetables! Overall, 456 New Shanghai had fantastic food and a welcoming atmosphere. The service was prompt and friendly, making for an all-around great dining experience. If you're in NYC and looking for some Chinese cuisine & delicious soup dumplings, come on through!

3.5 stars seems about right to me. The pork soup dumplings were AMAZING - rich and filling of umami. The crispy shredded beef (also recommended by the New York Times) was fine but not very interesting. I'd probably have it as a comfort food if I lived in the neighborhood. Service was quick and efficient, and they seemed able to accommodate everyone on a Monday evening. Overall, I would absolutely come back for the dumplings - which, honestly, are a meal for one by themselves!!!

If you're going to Chinatown, you need to visit 456 new Shanghai. The lunch special is a steal. For around $9 you get tea, soup, rice, and tour choice of dish. We also order the soup dumplings - really juicy and delish. Don't pass this place up.

Get the dumplings! And nothing else! One of the best things about traveling is being able to try food from all over the world, all over the world. The last time I had any sort of dumpling this good was when I was in Vancouver, and that is setting the bar high. It also helps that you get eight with an order, EIGHT! The price is also incredibly fair as well as they are around $7-$8, which is about $1 a dumpling. That is a great deal. The staff is also very friendly and will show you how to eat these, which you never see these days. Most just leave you up to your own devices, but here they want to see to it that the food you enjoyed, that they prepared, is eaten properly and thoughtfully. That is how you treat a customer. In addition, they offer lunch specials that are likely worth checking out. There is nothing wrong with some chicken, beef, white rice, and lo mein noodles as a meal if you want to go that route. So are the dumplings! Enjoy!

We came in around 7:30 on a Friday night. The place was pretty busy but they sat us immediately. Very nice and quick service. They bring tea for the table. So hard to just choose a few menu items! Amazing xiao long bao and peanut wonton. Reasonable prices and good atmosphere inside. Will definitely be back very soon!!

FYI: I'm a huge fan of Shanghainese food This place is like a second home to me and has a spot on my "JBW Top Hits" list. The waiters all greet me with a friendly "Welcome back!" and I don't even open a menu since I know exactly what I'm getting: the pork soup dumplings, sauteed string beans (gan bian si ji dou), and vegetable dumplings (eat these as soon as they arrive, since the skins will get crusty the longer you wait). To be honest, these three dishes have been my tried-and-true go-tos for so long; I've ventured a bit into the world of sauteed dishes and such, but I keep coming back for these.
